Aston Martin DBX : the road is not enough

It is a groundswell that has taken away all the builders. Only a few still resist, and always to the invader. Which one ? But the SUV of course ! So here is the turn for the respectable house of grand breton Aston Martin to give in to the craze with the DBX, that carries all the hopes of growth of the brand.

After a few months of years of teasing, so here is the DBX, the first recreational vehicle / 4×4 / family of Aston Martin. The concept of DBX presented in 2015 presented an original proposal of large cut high-mounted 2 doors, a bit in the spirit of the deceased Mega Track. Interesting idea, which was unfortunately not selected for the series. In view of the investments and the financial stake, Aston returned to a silhouette much more consensual SUV 5-door hatchback. It is more common, but Aston Martin can be measured frontally to its competitors, the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, or even Rolls Royce Cullinan (forget the Porsche Cayenne, too-commoners).

The teasers have already revealed the main lines of the DBX. It is a SUV profile, with a line fastback very pronounced, which is reminiscent of the design of the Maserati Levante. The designers at Gaydon have obviously brought a good number of details, which will give him his identity of Aston : a trapezoidal front grille, headlights seeming to come straight out of a DB11 and a small spoiler duckbill sitting on the tailgate between the lights further refined, in the spirit of the last Vantage.

Then, this DBX, true or false in the Aston ? I am shared. I love Aston Martin, but I don’t like many SUV’s… at first glance, the “SUVisation” was rather well done. The DBX retains a certain British Touch and could be closer to the state of mind of the sedan, Rapid, in addition to the top. Has see it in real life, in the street, to realize. The DBX is a great car (5,02 m long and 2 m wide) and boasts a very comfortable wheelbase of more than 3 m. Obviously, the weight is rather high with 2 245 kg.

The cabin, that some might consider antiquated, in my opinion is worthy of that of an Aston. No multimedia screen 28″, neon lights that flash, ostentatious, bling bling. No. The dashboard is symmetrical, is simple and discreet, all draped in leather. Digital meters round in front of the driver and the multimedia screen to a very reasonable diagonal are the only concession visible in the modern world. Only regret : the control box buttons is retained, and the latter are placed very high on the centre console, not very accessible in case of maneuvers.

For the rest, the atmosphere and the luxury are preserved, the DBX, becoming also the first Aston 5 places. The sides practices are also available, optional : roof bar, bike carrier, hitch, compartment for dogs, ski hatch, etc. Shocking ? Rolls-Royce offers exactly the same facilities for its Cullinan, then why not. It should be noted that the trunk offers a beautiful capacity of over 600 litres, of which serenely go shopping on Saturday morning.

And for THE race, the DBX hosts under the hood the well-known V8 biturbo 4-liter original AMG, already seen in particular on the DB11 and Vantage. He develops here 550 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The DBX is of course equipped with all-wheel-drive and has an automatic transmission 9 reports, that came straight from Mercedes. In order to be comfortable in all circumstances, the chassis is equipped with a control system, anti-roll assets, depreciation run and can if necessary lift up to 45 mm or lower it by 50 mm. The performances are very good : with a maximum speed of 291 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. It is rumored that a version V12 could be available at a later date, as well as a version equipped with the V6 hybrid from the future Valhalla. But for this, it will require that the DBX sold well. Aston Martin plays a very large with this model and its plan for future development depends in large part on sales figures.

The DBX will be available from the second half of 2020 for a base price of 195,000 €, excluding options, of course.
